Thanks to its astonishing history, which dates back over 2000 years, charming Valencia offers a unique mix of medieval, art deco and modernist architecture, alongside an endless array of attractions. Promising its visitors an unbeatable combination between city, sand and sunshine, this fabulous destination is an ideal choice for a unique European city break. Overall, we thought that the hotel tried to be an up-market four star resort but doesn't quite manage to reach the required standard to call itself four star.As the third-largest city in Spain, Valencia is hot on the heels of cosmopolitan Madrid and Barcelona, offering guests a thriving nightlife, endless eateries and fascinating culture. The hotel has two bars - the main bar opposite the reception area lacks atmosphere and reminded us of an airport terminal waiting area, while the second is an Irish Pub that shows english football on video screens. The main hotel restaurant, Columbus, serves adequate food but service was unfriendly and slow. We had an excellent meal at the El Olivo restaurant but be aware that it is not cheap.

You need to be aware that the hotel is set in a large complex of holiday apartments and villas, which all look pretty much the same and that there are no restaurants or bars outside the hotel for several miles. The bathroom was OK and the balcony provided limited views of the sea. The location right on a long sandy beach is excellent but we were surprised to find that what they advertised as a "Junior Suite" only turned out to be a fairly average hotel room with a bed, two chairs and a chest of drawers.

We stayed at the Oliva Nova Golf Hotel at the end of February 2005. This is not a good hotel for holidays, but would suit golf maniacs and people on business conferences - but be prepared to sleep on the floor. The staff were polite and helpful, but quite business like. In the evening there is the choice of the lobby bar which is like an airport waiting lounge - or an Irish bar showing English football. The breakfast was excellent, we had one lunch there - the food was good, but the atmosphere and service were not great and it was VERY expensive for what you get. The beds in both rooms had very uncomfortable mattresses that caused both my wife and i to have back pain every morning. First they gave us a twin room, but we complained and got a double on the 2nd day. We booked in to a junior suite - which was a bog standard hotel room - nothing special at all. It didn't help that there was drilling going on in the spa area we were trying to relax in and lots of people smoking. The spa and indoor pool are nice but not fantastic and definitely been to better. The outdoor pool was closed as it is not heated. Try the steak!! We went in december, so the hotel was very empty. The best restaurant nearby we went to was an Argentinean restaurant just outside Oliva. 15 minutes drive is Denia - a typical Costa Blanca tourist trap but with plenty of choice of bars and restaurants to cater for most tastes. It's a couple of miles - 10 minute drive from Oliva - a fairly industrial / residential Spanish town with few bars and restaurants. The location is about 45 minutes drive from both Valenica and Alicante. It's located on a very long and beautiful beach. The hotel is part of a huge complex of villas set around an apparently very good golf course - although we didn't use it.
